4th Annual Hope for Aids Skating Show, November 24, 2007

George Cowan performed his solo during the 4th Annual Hope for Aids Skating Show at the Cambridge Ice Centre.  Money was raised for orphaned children in Ethiopia. It was a great night of skating featuring all levels of skaters from around Ontario including Chris Mabee and a memorable spoof of "Blades of Glory".  Kayla Cuccarolo was also honored to present flowers to the skaters at the end of the evening.  Thanks to all the PFSC members who came out to support this cause and see a great show too!  The event was very successfully organized by Lynne Pocock.

There are Hockey Tournaments held in the arena every year at this time. We need to arrange make up classes for all of our Saturday skaters.

For the recreational skaters / CANSkate programs we offer classes on Wednesday evenings at 5:10pm or 6:10pm, and Thursdays at 4:30. We would like our Saturday Skaters to choose one of those times to come for the 3 weeks we are off. There are only so many kids that can be handled on each session, so it will be a first come, first serve basis for signing up for make up classes. There are approx. 60 skaters we need to accommodate. We will offer 25 spaces on the Wed. 5:10 session, 15 spaces on the Wed. 6:10 session and 25 spaces on the Thursday session.

On Saturday Dec. 1, 8 and 15 classes, there will be a sheet available that you can sign up for your desired make up day and time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation with this matter.

Make up sessions for the Regional and Sectional skaters will be posted on the website throughout December.

What Preston Means To Me

Report By: Zoey Brown - Pre-Novice Single, Novice Pairs
I came to Preston in 2000---I was guest skating with senior skaters with people like Billy Eaton and Gord Willems---pretty scary for a 7 year old.  While I was skating there was this coach with a large oral cavity yelling and pointing ---WHO'S THAT?!?!  I'm sure you can guess who that was.  I've had Canner as my base coach ever since that day.

Christmas Parade FloatThere are so many things Preston means to me but I thought I'd focus on one thing. And that is how Preston prepared me for who I am today. I started in the competitive stream almost immediately.

My first sectionals were in Leamington and I was skating pre-juvenile.  My buddy was Shannon Murray; I think I still have some lip smackers left over that she gave me for my buddy gift.

I stayed over night with the team and not with my parents, which was very strange for us.  Who would do my hair and make up? Who would I sleep with? Would I get any sleep at all? Who was going to wake me up?  Who was going to feed me?  Apparently "they" had it all figured out---"they" had been doing it for years before I came around.

There were schedules for everything: who you were rooming with---what time food was going to be ordered in---where and when every one skated. I did get a wake up call and there were people

(Ms Huston) prepared to do my hair and make up.  There was a bus driver (Ms Drewitt) to drive us back and forth to the arena. Everything was all planned out.  Every detail---even guards in the hallway to make sure lights out stayed out and people stayed in their own rooms. This also protected me from the wrath of the "skating mother".  Yes they do grow horns, as sections get closer.

This ritual repeated over the years and little did I know I was getting prepared for my life now.  I have been fortunate enough to go to many competitions at high levels including divisionals, nationals and Canada winter games. I have now traveled to Moncton, the Yukon and Germany with out my parents and with out Preston team leaders.  I know that all of the Preston skaters can do the same because they too were prepared by the team leaders to be ready.  We have had nothing but praise from the leaders of the WOS saying how they never have to worry about Preston skaters because they are always organized and ready to go with out being told what to do at competitions.

So at this time I would like to say thank you to all the coaches and volunteers for helping me and all of the skaters to be prepared and organized not only for completions but for life.

Fundraising
  • MacMillans pick up is on December 15th - 1:00pm- 3:00pm @ the Preston Auditorium.  Orders that are not picked up by 3:00pm will not be the responsibility of the Preston FSC. We do not have storage facilities to keep the product good.
  • When your Regal order is filled, we will be contacting you either by email or phone to pick it up @ the Preston Aud.
  • Another fundraiser which Preston does is the collection of Zehrs tapes.  Parents are asked to submit their Zehrs tapes into the Preston Club office.  We receive Zehrs vochures which we use @ ice show time to feed our volunteers.
  • MacMillian's, orders forms for March will be coming.
  • Golf Tournament, Summer 2008, more info to come.
